The Hawaii Betsuin honored Norman Hirohata-Goto with the Asoka Award at the temple’s 2015 annual membership meeting and New Year’s Party on January 25.

Betsuin board officer Wayne Yoshioka made the award presentation, noting in his remarks Norman’s outstanding contributions to YBA, Dharma School, as a Betsuin and Honolulu District Council board member, historian, real estate advisor, and supporter of Peace Day.

In accepting the award, Norman noted his history with the Betsuin began even before World War II. He recalled the English language program under Reverend Hunt and the Betsuin softball team as two of the reasons why he maintained strong ties to the Betsuin in the post-war years. Norman expressed appreciation for the many that enriched his experience and encouraged his dharma path, especially Lois Yasui for recruiting him to be a Dharma School teacher.
