05/22/22: Hawaii Betsuin has made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person Bon Dance for 2022. “Causes and conditions” have changed, including the new CDC assessment of Honolulu County as “high risk” (red level) and the recent apparent higher incidence of COVID within our extended sangha. Bon memorial lanterns and Bon services will still be offered as a way to express gratitude for our departed loved ones and their continued guidance in our lives.

Hooray! Causes and conditions permitting, the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin’s Bon Dance will be back in person this year, Friday June 24 and Saturday June 25, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.!

The event will be scaled back from pre-COVID years (fewer food offerings, larger social hall closed). But, the event will still include:

  • dancing
  • live festival music
  • taiko drumming
  • fellowship
  • ono food
  • temple tours

A brief service in the main temple hall at 4:30 p.m. will precede the opening of the event outdoors.

We welcome all to join us in this time of remembrance and appreciation!

As we all know, the COVID situation is evolving. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility in the case that we need to update our plans. Thank you too for being proactive about protecting yourself and your community: for example, having a mask available, using the hand-washing stations, and staying home if sick.

We will update this calendar item with any additions or changes (for example, if and when Bon Dance practice sessions will be available).
