Honpa Hongwanji Hawai‘i Betsuin’s Buddha Day Service

Buddha Day, or Hanamatsuri, is observed to celebrate the birth of the founder of Buddhism, Shakyamuni Buddha. Hanamatsuri literally means flower festival because legend says that the Buddha was born in Lumbini garden with all kinds of beautiful flowers growing.

About Our Speaker

Rev. Richard Tennes

Rev. Richard Tennes grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and has a background in Religions Studies, History, Literature, and Music. He studied Buddhism at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, California, and became a Hongwanji Minister in 2007. With his wife Parinya’s help, Rev. Tennes served at the Hawaii Betsuin from 2007 to 2013, and as Resident Minister of Kahului Hongwanji Mission from July 2013 until his retirement in August 2022.

After retirement, Rev. and Mrs. Tennes settled in Arkansas where they are leading a quiet country life, spending their time reflecting, gardening, reading, and taking care of their two cockatiel friends Snowball and Coco, as well as their ten cats.
