Hawaii Betsuin minister Reverend Sol Kalu is lead instructor for a series of four Buddhism classes that will initiate an additional series of classes.
The first and second classes will be about basic Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. The third and fourth classes will be the beginnings of a Shoshinge/Wasan class. Shoshinge was written by the founder of Shin Buddhism, Shinran Shonin, and is one of the most fundamental sutra chants of the denomination. Shoshinge is chanted every weekday morning at Hawaii Betsuin. The wasan are poems written by Shinran, some of which are woven into the chanting of Shoshinge.
You can listen to Shoshinge here:
Classes will be held at the Annex temple from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Fridays, from February 16 until March 9. From then on, the Shoshinge/Wasan class will continue but the class times and dates are yet to be determined.
Venue Note: Access to our temple campus is from Lusitana Street (not Pali Highway). The Annex Temple is just makai (ocean direction) of the larger temple building.
