More about the July 2024 DIALOGUE

Living Nembutsu book coverThe next DIALOGUE will be a 3-part monthly series held on July 10, August 14, and September 11 to discuss Rev. Dr. Jeff Wilson’s new book, Living Nembutsu. Professor Wilson will be the 25 th Annual Bloom-Futaba Memorial Lectures in-person speaker on October 11th, 2024, so this series will be an opportunity to prepare for his visit to Honolulu.

Our DIALOGUE discussion will focus on Chapter 5 of “Living Nembutsu,” where the distinct Shin Buddhist social engagement perspective is fully explored in the context of Shinran Shonin’s “radical” views. Dr. Wilson illuminates why helping others is fundamental to every day Shin Buddhist living, especially in the development of American Shin Buddhism.

Through framing Shinran’s views in “Six Principles for Engaged Buddhism,” Sensei Jeff poses the question “what must Pure Land Buddhism, especially the Jodo Shinshu school, do to contribute to the reduction of suffering in the world, especially as caused or heightened by social ills such as discrimination, poverty, war, and climate change?”

For Hongwanji Hawaii, the question might also include: “How can social engagement be cultivated in our sanghas.”

About the DIALOGUE Project

The DIALOGUE Project is a project of Hawaii Betsuin’s Social Concerns Committee in which sangha members and friends are invited to explore social issues with others through a Buddhist lens. DIALOGUE meets at Hawaii Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway and/or by Zoom, TBA. All DIALOGUE topics are contributed by participants, all suggestions welcomed! If you are interested in exploring social concerns with others through a Buddhist lens, then the Hawaii Betsuin DIALOGUE Project is for you!
