Family Promise of Hawai’i is a nonprofit organization to help families with children escape homelessness. Over 60 churches provide host sites where families have a safe place to sleep, good food, and generous hospitality. Guests stay at a host site for a week, then move on to the next host site.
The Betsuin participates through the Honolulu Hongwanji Council together with our fellow district temples Jikoen Hongwanji, Kailua Hongwanji, and Moiliili Hongwanji. Charlene Kihara (Minister Lay Assistant with Tokudo) coordinates the council’s participation.
In 2017, the Council will be engaged with Family Promise during the weeks of May 28 to June 4 at Moiliili Hongwanji Mission and September 24 to Oct 1, 2017 at Jikoen Hongwanji Mission. Due to scheduling difficulties, Hawaii Betsuin will not be a host site this year but will still assist with meals and volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please contact Alan Goto via the temple office, (808) 536-7044.
