The birthday of the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, Shinran Shonin, is commemorated during the month of May in all Jodo Shinshu temples in Japan and worldwide, including Hawaii and the US mainland. Known as Gotan-e, this is one of the six major services observed annually by Jodo Shinshu temples to honor and pay respect to Shinran Shonin.
About Our Guest Speaker, Rev. Tomo Hojo
Rev. Tomo Hojo, resident minister at West Kauai Hongwanji Mission, was born in January 1986. His family temple is in Wakayama. He graduated from Ryukoku University in March 2008 and received his Kyoshi ordination. He continued his studies, including the International Ministerial Orientation Program in California in 2008. He joined the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii on May 13, 2009. He was at the Hawaii Betsuin from Sept. 16, 2009-Aug. 15, 2014. He then was assigned to West Kauai Hongwanji from Aug. 16, 2014 to the present. He did further Buddhist Studies at Musashino University from April 1, 2016-Mar. 31, 2020.
