Last year, the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Board of Directors made Juneteenth a holiday, with the statewide office closing on Monday June 20. Here is the announcement from the December 2021 HQ Update newsletter:
At the Board of Directors meeting on December 4, 2021, the Board decided to add Juneteenth Day as Hawaii Kyodan Holiday. In 2022, Juneteenth Day will be observed on June 20th. Juneteenth, official name of federal holiday is Juneteenth National Independence Day, is also called Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Juneteenth Independence Day, is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, observed annually on June 19.
