Rev. Dr. Taitetsu Unno’s passing on December 13, 2014 in Eugene, Oregon is a great loss to the family and the members of Jodo Shin Sangha in America. He came to Hawaii first as visiting Professor of Religion at UH Manoa in 1973 under the sponsorship of Hawaii Kyodan. It was from that time that Dr. Unno helped many members, clergy and lay, understanding Jodo Shinshu in English language. His effort developed into numbers of religious/educational program in Hawaii Kyodan. Dr. Unno was an honorary trustee of Pacific Buddhist Academy.

Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and Pacific Buddhist Academy will hold a special memorial service on Saturday, January 24, 2015, 2:00 p.m. at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin. Mrs. Alice Unno, Dr. Mark and Mrs. Megumi Unno, are planning to attend the service.

The Family has requested that all the correspondence including condolences and condolence gifts be made through Hawaii Kyodan Headquarters, and the Koden from the people in Hawaii be designated to “Pacific Buddhist Academy”. If you wish to do so in honor of Dr. Taitetsu Unno, please send it to the Hawaii Kyodan Headquarters (Attn: Rev. Toshiyuki Umitani) by January 20, 2015, or for those attending the memorial service in Hawaii, the reception table will receive your donation.
