March 15: Spring Higan Major Service

    From the Goji: Rev. Etsuko Mikame is originally from Ōda, Shimane Prefecture in Japan. Her family temple located in her hometown, has been spreading the Dharma for 300 years. She graduated from Waseda University, majoring in English and English literature. She then studied Buddhism and Jōdo Shinshū for two years at Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin (the Central Buddhist Seminary) in Kyoto, Japan. Afterward, she worked for three years as a dormitory manager at the seminary, where she guided students in Buddhist liturgy and Dharma talks. She served as a minister at the San Jose Betsuin until January of last year. From mid-February, she returned to her family temple in Shimane Prefecture, where she continues her work as a Buddhist minister. She enjoys music and good food.

Rev. Soryu Kagahi

Hongwanji Day honors the Rev. Soryu Kagahi, the first Jodo Shinshu minister who came to Hawaii from Japan in March 1889 to propagate the faith among the Japanese laborers on the sugar plantations.
