The service at Hawaii Betsuin commemorating 125 years of Honpa Hongwanji in Hawaii featured two messages from youth leaders. Listen to Dustain Iwasaki, President of the Hawaii Federation of Junior Young Buddhist Associations and Lacy Tsutsuse, recent YESS Camp co-chair. Both are members of the Buddhist Study Center Fellowship Club.
Our guest speaker for the 2014 Eshinni and Kakushinni Day service was Reverend Jan Youth from Mililani Hongwanji. The theme of her talk was “Six Harmonies & Respectfulness.”
Rev. Muneto delivers the dharma talk on Buddha Day, or Hanamatsuri, the celebration of the birth of the Buddha.
Reverend Hojo reflects on his five years at Hawaii Betsuin and finds dharma lessons in a running relay race in which he participated.
Reverend David delivers the spring Ohigan message. She is introduced by Arthur Kohara, who provides a brief biographical background, and then begins her talk with a story set during Buddhism’s introduction to China from India via the Silk Road.
Rev. Kauffman continues on the theme of attachments, focusing on material attachments. He begins by talking about the post World War II boom years in housing, appliances, and cars and the advertising that went with it.
Rev. Muneto reflects on the importance of remembering our temple history on Hongwanji Day and in this 125th anniversary year for the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.
Rev. Kauffman’s message is about attachments. He begins with a story of two monks walking down a road in springtime.
Rev. Hagio spoke about Nirvana Day, on which we commemorate the death of the Shyakamuni Buddha and his entry into Nirvana.
