Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin will host the 27th Annual Bloom-Futaba Memorial Lectures on Sunday, November 8, 2026, from 3 to 6 p.m., featuring Rev. Dr. Aaron Shōken Proffitt, associate professor of Japanese Studies at SUNY-Albany.
Titled “Re-Thinking the Western View of Buddhism,” the program will explore how traditional distinctions between Buddhist schools, particularly Esoteric and Pure Land Buddhism, may obscure their historical connections. Drawing on the teachings of the 13th-century Japanese Buddhist scholar-monk Dōhan, Rev. Proffitt will offer fresh perspectives on the diversity and interconnectedness of Buddhist traditions.
Dr. George Tanabe, professor emeritus of religion at the University of Hawaiʻi, will serve as respondent.
The lectures are free and open to the public, with participation available in person at Hawaii Betsuin or online via Zoom. Advance registration is encouraged.
