On October 31, 2013, Bishop Eric Matsumoto of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii testified on behalf of the Mission for marriage equality at the Hawaii State House of Representatives. His statement begins:

Today, I’d like to express strong support for Senate Bill 1. The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, the largest Buddhist denomination in Hawaii which I represent today, for close to 125 years has been spreading a message of all-inclusive wisdom and all-embracing compassion. Today, guided by great wisdom and compassion, we are encouraged to equally respect all people. The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii’s support for marriage equality is based on the equality of all people.
