On the 100th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Lili’uokalani’s passing this year, the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii will pay tribute to the Queen by conducting a special 100th anniversary service in her honor.
On May 19, 1901, Queen Lili’uokalani attended Shinran Shonin’s Birthday Service at the former Fort Lane temple (pictured below) which brought forth attention, locally and internationally, that the Queen of Hawaii had attended a Buddhist service. This event impacted many of the temple members who had shied away from attending service because of the racial and religious discrimination in the air at the time. Temple members’ esteem was boosted as a result and members and others began coming to temple services.
It is with a deep debt of gratitude that the Hongwanji pays tribute to this most gracious and understanding Queen of Hawaii for her support and love of the people of Hawaii. As part of the service, there will be a special “Living History” presentation by Jackie Pualani Johnson, retired drama professor of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, who will portray Her Majesty reminiscing about that auspicious day in May 1901. Also in attendance will be special guests from the Hawaiian community and many others. Please join us!
