In 2018, Hawaii Betsuin introduced “Obon Memorial Ribbons” as a tangible symbol of remembering and expressing gratitude to our departed loved ones. We continue this new tradition in 2019.

Obon 2018 memorial ribbons in the hondo

Obon Memorial Ribbons in the hondo in 2018.

Like last year, you may pre-order a ribbon printed with a sagarifuji (the Jodo Shinshu wisteria crest) and your loved one’s name. Ribbons will be displayed in front of the altar in the main temple hall through August 5.

To order a memorial ribbon, please fill out an order form (available online or in the Hawaii Betsuin office) and mail or turn it in to the office. The address is on the order form. There is no deadline, but the earlier you order a ribbon the longer it will be displayed.

The suggested donation is $20 per ribbon with checks made out to HHHB. For more information, please contact the temple office at 536-7044.

This year, we will also offer do-it-yourself Obon Memorial Ribbons during Bon Dance at the donation table and in the main temple hall as well as during Bon Mairi services. These will also be hung in front of the altar through August 5.
